Peru fish prices rise 46.5% in first half 2013

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru reported that average prices of fresh and frozen fish in Lima and Callao markets spiked by 46.6% in January to August this year, due to poor supply.
The overall figure for seafood products for human consumption, adding shellfish, reached 34.2%.
The only exception to the rising trend, which also affected striped mullet and hake, was albacore tuna. The central bank’s governor Julio Velarde recently noted that “in the last months, albacore tuna has lost ground, its prices being some 20% lower, and so have those of mackerel”.
But speaking to business daily Gestion, shellfish and fish retailers said that even albacore tuna consumer prices have recovered of late, with one kilogram costing 12 Peruvian sol (PEN), compared to PEN 9 in June. Hake is now at PEN 8 per kilo and mackerel’s has risen to PEN 9.
Household spending in fish and shellfish still is a minor item in the Peruvian shopping list, though, accounting for a meager 1% of overall food spending.
“The reason of these higher prices is, mainly, a lower offer,” explained Humberto Speziani, president of the exporters association’s fisheries committee. “The demand is growing, too, but there’s no enough production to satisfy it.”
Government data showed that the volume of hydro-biologic produce during the first six months of 2013 fell 13% comparing to the same period last year, from 670,600 metric tons to 587,700t.
